Rhal Sol Cruz Jr of MERALCO Chess Club and a Grade 6 student in La Salle Green Hills attending a one-on-one training with GM Villamayor in Oct 2009.

One year later, Rhal won a BRONZE medal for the RP Kiddies in the ASEAN Primary School Sports Olympiad in Indonesia. Aside from the international bronze, he has won a gold in PRADA, Top Kiddy Player of Cainta in Tahanan Walang Hagdanan Christmas Cup, and 2nd Place in Mandaluyong Meet Elementary Boys in Dec 2009, silver in Xavier Inter-Scholastic in Jan 2010, bronze in NCR Meet in Feb 2010, gold in Battle of MERALCO Jr GMs in March 2010, Top MERALCO Grade School Player in MERALCO Juniors Championship in May 2010, Top 10 in Angpin 12U Age Group in June 2010, gold in PAYA and 3rd in National Book Store in Aug 2010, gold in San Lorenzo Ruiz Cup and Top 10 in Las Pinas Rotary 12U in Sep 2010.

But of course, Rhal has other trainors also such as his LSGH Head Coach Erwin Carag and Assistant Coaches NM Bernardino and Carino, MILO Checkmate's NM Maga, Rizal Province's FM Castellano, former MERALCO Chess Team reinforcement NM Vasquez and 1 or 2 sessions with the likes of IM Cardoso, NM Merano, NM Bagamasbad, NM Gatus, NM Agagon and NM Lao, and most importantly the hands on training he gets from MERALCO "GMs".

How is GM Bong doing in Spore with Chesskidz? Don't think he has FB account.

Just from chess news, have read he manned Board 2 (I think after GM Mariano II at Bd1) for Chesskidz in the Merdeka Chess Team Event late last year where
Chesskidz emerged as champs. Teammates were Elo Mariano and Joel Hicap (Brent Coach).

In the recent Spore Open, he placed 2nd to GM Wen Yang, derailed Sheider in last round, but glad to hear Sheider still earned IM norm from that tourney.

Now that TataSteel (Corus) is starting soon, can't help to recall he was tapped by chessdom for livegames analysis of GM Wesley's games. Is there an encore or now
too busy with Spore teaching job?

Wonder when Des will have some time for his chessheroes blog again, seems he's busy lately. He helped connect GM Bong and chessdom.

GM Bong,

One of our MERALCO Jrs. MICHAEL LIRAZAN (4th from left in the second photo above) topped the Mandaluyong Meet Elementary Boys group yesterday. He studies at Pleasant Hills Elementary School.

CM Navarro (in top photo) also made it through the Binan Cluster, Unit Meet to advance to the Provincial Meet which was conducted last Nov in Sta
Cruz, Laguna but didn't make it na to the STCAA (Southern Tagalog regionals), it was still good run for a first timer.

Chess iskolar Jasper Marce made it thru Sta Rosa's City Meet and advanced to STCAA which will be conducted in Lucena City around Feb20. Goal of qualifying to STCAA achieved, eversince the trainings and tournaments since March 2010 (starting with Ateneo's Leviste Cup). Now, getting to next level is the
bigger challenge. The various cities and provinces with entries to STCAA will now go through their respective training programs by mid-Jan.
