Fifth Prospero Pichay Sr. Memorial Chess Tournament (August 12-15)
GM MARK PARAGUA TRIES TO REDEEM HIMSELF

BY: MARLON BERNARDINO

AFTER failing to make it to this year's RP Team bound for 38th World Chess Olympiad in Dresden in November, GM Mark Paragua tries to redeem himself when he compete in the upcoming Fifth Prospero Pichay Sr. Memorial Chess Tournament to be held on August 12 to 15 in Cantilan, Surigao.

Paragua, who topped the Marshall Open in New York finish in a tie for 4th to 6th placers in the Grand Finals of the NCFP qualifying round for RP's representative in Chess Olympiad with fellow GMs Jayson Gonzales and Darwin Laylo but fall short in the tie break points and failed to be a part of Olympic team.

"Gagawin ko ang best na makapag perform ng maganda sa Pichay Sr. Memorial Open Chess sa Surigao. Magandang preparation na din po ito sa World Mind Games sa Beijing," said the 1998 World Rapid Under-14 Champion Paragua, who will led RP team in first World Mind Sports Games in Beijing, China later this year.

Tournament director and National Master Cesar Caturla is optimistic that Paragua will bounce back here in Fifth Prospero Pichay Sr. Memorial Chess Tournament, in this FIDE rated event, being held to honor and commemorate the late Father of NCFP president Prospero "Butch" Pichay Jr.

"Sa tingin ko babawi si Mark (Paragua) dito sa Pichay Sr. Memorial Chess," said Caturla, a former Olympian member.

The total prize money is P300,000 with P100,000 going for the champion, P50,000 for the second placer, and P30,000 for the third placer. There will also be prizes up to the 25th placer. Registration is only P200 and you may contact NM Caturla at mobile no. 0928-713-2397 for complete details. MARLON BERNARDINO

Again this is a tournament where home grown talents will likely be discovered so please to local players especially near the area prepare and join the tournament. it is very rare moment for you to be fitted against the best in the country or even foreigners.
To the top pinoy players it is also the tournament to show what stuff they are made of.
With very attractive prizes expect almost all titled players will be joining and beside an opportunity to be in a new place in case you have not gone to that area yet.
