The second tournament in the National Book Store Chess Tournament Series is come and gone. Thank you to all who came and played. We expected about 60 players to show up, we had just over fifty come in. It was a very nice turnout.

I will post the results later. I'm still pretty tired from the tournament.

Sir SCUGrad,

Just an inquiry. Did Toys r Us sponsor any additional prizes for the tournament? Some of the kids were expecting "gift certificates to this world famous toy emporium". Thanks.

Yes, thanks for asking. I spoke to TRU and they donated P5000 worth of gift certificates. NBS management decided we would use those gift certificates as additional prizes in the September tournament...the big one...where we hope to draw 120 players.

But don't you think that GCs to a toy store would be appreciated only by kids in the 11 and Under and 8 and Under section? I think kids 12 and up are a bit too old for TRU. What do you think?

Let me speak cause it was my two boys' first time to join a tournament and they both didn't make it into the Top 10, so I'm not a subjective party.

Speaking from a parent's perspective, when you posted that GC's will be given, I told my kids that, in fact it was a good carrot for my younger one to join his first tournament. I think whether the GC is P50 or P500, the fact that we said GCs will be given and parents read that and most likely downloaded that info to their kids is gonna put the parents in a tough spot if the kids end up in the Top 10 and no GCs come their way.

I respectfully suggest that we consider giving all the Top 10s (including 12 and up, I'm 35 and would still LOVE GC's from TRU  ) a token GC because we had already committed to it when we said: "our kids should expect gift certificates (from) this world famous toy emporium."

If we believe it is better to allocate more for the Sept tourney then I suggest we clearly communicate that the May to August tourney will not have GCs but only medals for the Top 10s. Management of expectations, I guess.

In any case, I would really like to commend the organizers, sponsors and people behind this event. It was professionally run and all the kids seem to have had lots of fun! Congrats to all.

First off, thanks for your comments.

I can understand your feelings about the GCs from Toys R Us. TRU gave P5000 worth of GCs to NBS to dispose as they wish. It's NBS who decides how much and what to give away as prizes in any given tournament. So I had no control over that.

However, I think the fault lies with me. I did say that we should expect GCs from TRU as prizes. When I first wrote that, I had just heard that TRU had officially decided to come aboard as a sponsor and so I naturally assumed that they would give GCs as prizes. I did not expect the decision from NBS to hold off giving away the GCs until September. In short, I should not have said anything. For that, I apologize.

If you look at the prizes section though of the tournament announcement, there are no GCs mentioined--only medals. Be assured that if there are any changes in the prizes, I will be certain to change that section of the tournament announcement. In the meantime, please refer to the tournament annnouncement of the May 1 event.

I'm glad that everyone had a good time and that the event came off as being professionally run, etc. A lot of credit goes to the people from NBS who helped me, especially to Ms. Loraine Perez.

I guess that's clarified and over with.

In our case, having participated in the 1st March leg we kind of had the general idea the prizes were medals and no cash, and we were more pre-occupied to making it to the venue on time.

Just a question, for the Sept 'bigger' event which will again be done at the ground floor / fastfood area, will the previous winners of the legs have some form of slots or maybe some discounts / incentives, subsidezed by the sponsors. We understand the organizer also has business side to consider and have some return for his time (hindi biro magpa-tournament), and we would like to have tournaments like this continue, for the kiddies grassroots.

The tournaemnts were designed to be independent, i.e. one tournament's results doesn't have anything to do with any of the others. So, no, the previous winners are not seeded or anything into the september tournament.
