Against Armenia, I hope na mamaintain ni Wesley na wala pa siyang talo sa 2700 super grandmaster. Si Eugene naman ay tiyak na marathon game na naman. Paiiyakin niya ang opposite GM sa haba ng laro.

In the 4th round against Armenia, Wesley held his ground against super GM Levon Aronian(ELO-2816) and their game ended in a draw. GMs Barbosa & Paragua had also drawn their games against super GMs Movsesian & Akopian respectively but IM Dimakiling lost to super GM Gabriel Sargissian(ELO-2693). Overall, our RP Men's team lost 1.5-2.5 against a 3rd ranked team. Not a bad performance.

Marlon's post in FB :

Almario Marlon Bernardino Jr.
STATEMENT FROM THE NATIONAL CHESS FEDERATION OF THE PHILIPPINES (NCFP) CHAIRMAN/PRESIDENT PROSPERO "BUTCH" PICHAY JR.

"We lost agains Armenia, a power house in the chess world but today we have shown to the whole world that the Philippine Chess is a future world power. No less than World no.2 Levon Aronian (2816) sang praises Wesley So in an interview in Istanbul. Because he salvage a draw against a better position of Wesley So. I thought mukhang mananalo pa sana si Wesley." said Pichay, who watched the game live through internet which lasted seven hours back home here in Manila.

"Oliver Barbosa and Mark Paragua are both playing at their best, infact i think they (Barbosa and Paragua ) are playing like grandmasters with an Elo rating of 2700 that's why Armenia just eked out a hard earned victory against the Philippines in that crucial game," added Pichay.

Yup, where are the rest of bloggers/kibitzers in pinoychessinforme?

These are exciting times in Phil chess, what more can we ask for? Our men's team upset higher seeded Moldova in rd2, shutout the Kazakhs in rd3
and a 'fighting match' vs 2 time Olympiad champ Armenia, and earned their respect in the process! Both our teams have won 3 of 4 matches
for 6 MPs!

Sa FB groups na 'Pinoy Chess Addicts' and 'Ahedres ng Pilipinas' eh abuzz and animated. Lahat na yata ng alam and kilalang chess author o blogger
are writing in their inspired write-ups.

Let us ALL UNITE behind our 2 Olympiad teams !

Sarap naman ng feeling! And magbabad tignan ang rankings after 5 rounds, ang Men's team ay 11th while ang Women's team ay 13th! Puede na bang ma-freeze and final na yan?

Women's team also won over South Africa 3-1 on wins by WIM Perena (over a WGM) and WNM Docena. WNM Frayna has 4.5/5 so far!

Prof. Bobby Ang in Chess Piece is correct:
"I have a good feeling about this team as, contrary to previous Olympiads, the players were able to train in actual tournament competitions in the region. Since early this year the President of the National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP), Prospero Pichay, has been sponsoring our leading players to international tournaments to hone their skills. I remember Oliver Barbosa, Mark Paragua, Richard Bitoon, Oliver Dimakiling, Eugene Torre, Joey Antonio, Rolando Nolte would go on their individual forays to do battle against the best Chinese, Indian and Vietnamese players."

Yes, the Teams' high spirits and perseverance are very evident in carving out hard earned wins for the team.
In round 5 GM Barbosa waylaid his opponent in a series of exchanges in f6 netting him an exchange ahead, also that stubborn pawn of GM Mark Paragua on f6 again caused his opponent to resign as well.
GM Wesley So's noteworthy performance against super strong opposition (Moldova,Armenia), IM Dimaks and GM Torre as well.

Our ladies team made us proud too in every round, not backing away in the conflict, sharing the same slate with the Men's team of 4-1 after 5.

Round 6 however is a further test for both teams. RP Mens versus probably GM Topalov-led Bulgaria. The Ladies will face France.
Goodluck Team Philippines. Round 6 is up.

chessmates,

Some notes :

- It's rest day today, round 6 resumes tomorrow. There is another rest day after round 10, before the final round 11.
http://www.chessolympiadistanbul.com/en/schedule.html

- AFGM Eugene Torre's 21st Olympiad appearance, getting ahead of equally legendary GM Lajos Portisch. joeyj in chessaccount also earlier reported that AFGM
also holds 2 other Olympiad records...

As of this writing, So, Torre & Paragua had drawn their games. The only remaining game is that of Barbosa & Georgiev and it looks drawish but there is a slim chance of Barbosa winning it.

Our Men's team won against powerhouse team of Bulgaria 2.5-1.5. It was GM Oliver Barbosa who delivered for the team winning over GM Kiril Georgiev in 59 moves. Georgiev made a blunder in the 57th move and that sealed his doom. Go Go RP Team!!

The win vs former World Champion-led Bulgaria was unbelievable in terms of FIDE rating and international experience. But with our constant prayers, "nothing is impossible". That was a geourgeous win by GM Oli over Georgiev.

This message will self-destruck in 5 seconds.

"Zoltan Almasi took his team into the lead with a win against Oliver Barbosa, but the legendary Eugenio Torre, first Asian Grandmaster and record holder with 21 appearances in the Olympiads, escaped from a passive position to pull a victory against Ferenc Berkes and equalise the score."

Good job RP team!!!..

We are truly blessed in the present day to be able to witness such chess endgame GEMS from AFGM Eugene Torre ! Aside from being a true gentleman & person &
chess warrior, some of his endgame gems like the GMA Cup win (he was champ) over Kazakh ace Murtas (he marched his king to the opponent's side ba yun, or was
that the Li Chao game?) and a couple of games vs Indians in the last Asian Games. One can replay those games in his chessgames.com site, for those
chess students who want to learn more on endgame techniques. Eto ay mga wala sa Dvoretsky Manual, kasi di pa naisusulat ang Torre Endgame Manual...

With opponents so highly rated, we need the vast experience of Eugene. On some occasions, he had the tendency to draw with ordinary FM. But with highly rated opponent, he has the tendency to exhaust his adversary and defeat them.

All Fillpinos should feel good with this winnings. We may not have won anything in the London Olympic, but we sure are triumphant against these powerhouses of chess.

Pawn to f3 against the KID? I thought it was shelved for some time! But in the hands of GM Oliver "Barbwire" Barbosa looks really fearsome, Idol Eugene, well i do play the Nimzo sometimes but never tested the pawn to d6 before. Looks very solid, Nigel Short(PCA challenger) unable to crack it. The Britons lost in this round. I remember the slugger Pacman Pacquiao sent another British named Hatton into deep slumber in round 2 i think. similar tales.
Well done RP Teams despite the losses on the distaff side. Lets get it on!

YES, gising na gising tayo and di nananaginip!

Last 3 rounds, wag sayangin ang magical run na eto, next ay China! These last 2 to 3 rounds will determine our FINAL placing which at the end of the day is what
would be on the record and will be the 'bottom line'.

Definitely, these achievements can herald a RENAISSANCE of Philippine chess, and HOPE MAJOR sponsors get into the fold! But we in the chess community also need
to help it along by promoting the benefits of the 'sport' of chess, and also cleaning up our acts

Against a legendary rook (Torre), Nigel's attempt was Shorthanded. Maybe he needs to change his name to Long.

Almost wiped out vs China in hard fought battles. As usual, ever reliable So is the lone survivor with a draw on board 1. Watching the games by internet, akala ko ay mag-work uli ang endgame magic ni Eugene vs Bu. Hope makabawi vs Vietnam in the penultimate round 10. Bakbakan din ito, dog-eat-dog battles again. We are wholeheartedly with you come what may, RP teams. Fight!!!

Frayna, and CM norm for Jedara Docena and Jodilyn Fronda.

Sana puede pa makahabol for WGM norm si WIM Perena, natalo vs Rumania kagabi eh, I think just needed a draw sana. 2 rounds pa...

We have a lot to be THANKFUL for :

- This 2012 Olympiad campaign has REKINDLED Pinoy pride in its chess culture & history - so far 3 BIG upsets vs higher rated Moldova,Bulgaria and England, and
a hard fought draw vs 4th seed Hungary ! The team has been fighting it out in the top boards since round 2

- This has elicited praises in media releases from NCFP officials Pres Pichay, Tolentino and Colmenares. Chess writers such as Marlon B. (ABS CBN,Philboxing,FB),
Ed Andaya (Journal), Bobby Ang (Business World), Joey Villar (Philstar), Roy Luarca (Inquirer) and bloggers joeyj / chessacount, blundercheck. It has also
electrified FB groups & other blogspots with messages from Pinoy chess enthusiasts all over the world !

- Bonus with majority of our Women players earning WIM or CM norms during this campaign.

- Now it boils down to the last 2 rounds, to determine the final placings, and cement these team's places in Olympiad history.

- We gain by early identification of the core for both Men's and Women's team members to the 2013 SEAG, where there are more chess events and
medals at stake! (Of course, most probably there will also be qualifiers next year for the other slots, to have open opporunities for aspiring players)

- Let us take this opportunity to elevate support for chess. Have a common campaign for DepEd's 'chess-in-schools' (starting w/ Grade 3), and sustained overseas
exposure for our candidate GMs, and elevation to SuperGM level for our young GMs.

- Have a genuine grassroots program and also take care of our talented 'Young Kiddie Masters', like budget for U-16 Olympiad next year, and World
Age Group for competitive players. Send our Jrs champs to the World Juniors

If our RP Men's team win against Romania in the 11th & last round tonite, we will most probably end up within the top ten of this world chess olympiad. That would then be a very good achievement for this team since it was several years ago that we were able to land in the top 10 of this competition. Let's hope & pray that they will achieve it. Go RP Team Go!!!

Getting to the top 10 of this Olympiad is doubly harder compared to the first achievement. Before, there was the Soviet Union which sent only one unit and in it are the Ukrainians, Russians, Belarussian, Armenian, Azeris, Uzbeks, Kazakhs, etc. Now, each nationalities send their own teams. And then, of course, you have the break up of Yugoslavia, the Croatian, Serbian, Macedonian, etc. are sending teams separately.

Men's team finished 21st after tiebreaks, tied for 19th to 33rd with 14 MPs. Compared to 50th place finish in 2010 and seeding of 35th, this is much better
performance!

Women's team placed 43rd with WIM title for J. Frayna and CM titles for J.Docena and J. Fronda

Let's apply the lessons learned to the next Olympiad. Like the BOGM/ Finals qualifier can be scheduled 2 to 3 months earlier, for longer preparation time
and team activities.

Hope the WGM campaigns for WIMs Perena and Frayna could be pursued, aside from the final GM drives of IMs Dimakiling & Dableo...

Susan Polgar's post in CG.com in GM Wes' page :

Susan Polgar: Not sure why my last post did not publish. The RP team won bronze in category B. Torre was the only player on stage to receive the cup. Perhaps the bus did not arrive for others. But it was good seeing him on stage representing the Philippines. The crowd roared for him :) Will publish pictures soon at http://www.ChessDailyNews.com
