Congratulations to Super GM Wesley So for placing 2nd in the 9th Asian Individual Open Chess Championship yesterday at the Subic Bay Exhibition and Convention Center. The said honor also earned him berth to the 2011 World Chess Cup slated in Khamty-Mansiysk, Russia late this year.
The 26-year-old Ni, conqueror of So in the seventh round, pooled 7.0 points on seven wins and four draws to claim his second title on Philippine soil and pocket the $6,000 (about P266,400) top prize.
So, who is skipping college this school year to concentrate on his bid to crash the elite 2700 club, prevailed over International Master Nguyen Thanh Son of Vietnam, GM Sahem Salem of United Arab Emirates, countryman IM Oliver Barbosa, GM Susanto Megaranto of Indonesia and Yu Ruiyan of China. He also drew with Chinese GM Yu Yangyi, GM Narayanan Gopal Geetha.
